0 At the instigation of Cr W. e the Borough Council e decided last Monday evening to 1 appoint delegates consisting of r the Mayor Crs Warren ? anc * Creeke to give eyidenfce before the Parliamentary Comimittee which; has been set up to inl vestigate» coastal shipping; and which will be visiting Whakatane in the course of its tour of the North. Cr Sullivan said that coastal shipping concerned Wliakatane vitally. The very town had been built from coastal shipping and woukl probably be maintained by it in the future. He would like 9 therefore, to see a strong case made out in favour of the retention of the port. Cr Shapley was in strong support. He pointed out that town and district drew good revenue from wharfages and harbour rates and this money was being devoted to reclamation work which was all in the interests of the town. It would be | a severe blow if the town were deprived of the shipping services, Cr Creeke said he would like to see a meeting planned with the Harbour Board for the purpose of considering all points which could be raised in favour of keeping the port open. Cr Canning: Shipping was always a thorn in the side of the Railways Department. The Council decided to appoint the delegates as above.
