QUEEN CARNIVAL OPENS
SUCCESSFUL FIRST NIGHT
POPULAR DANCE HELD
The first of a series of dances to be held in connection with the Queen Carnival took p]ace in the Winter Show Buildings on Friday evening, and was well supported by town and country residents. The three queens were present as befitted the opening night and were introduced to the public who appared to thoroughly approve of the choice. The hall was colourfully decorated with bunting the pillars being masses of greenery .studded tastefully with flowers of different shades. The orchestra (a much improved Premier Band) was very popular with the dancers the addition of another saxaphone and a string bass raising the standard of music by easily 100 per cent. Shortly before supper, Mr L. Luxton took the opportunity of introducing the three queens to the puband at the same time briefly outlined the events which are to take place in connection with the carnival. Supper itself was first-rate and the public did ample justice to it. [ Several very enjoyable extras were 1 played by Mtessrs Neville Harris and ] Wallie Lysaght Avhile a Monte Carlo was won by Miss Ivy Bryant and Mr 5 Merv Gumming. Mr O. Lord made 1 a capable M.C. s Dancing continued till 1 a.m. and i the: crowd dispersed more than c ready to support any further dances staged by the committees associated a with the carnival. I
