FROM GODLEY'S SOD HUT

EARLY DAYS RECALLED

The windows in the sod hut. at Ferry bridge were originally part of John Robert Godley's house at Lyttelton. Godley j who came to Canterbury in the Lady Nugent before the First Four brought his house, built, in with him, but.by some oversight the windows were left behind. Until the panes of glass arrived by a later ship from England, the Godley household managed with strips of canvas tacked across the window frames.' When the Godley homestead was demolished a few years ago, the panes of glass were preserved and are now installed in; the. sod hut.
