THE MANPOWER COMB
THE renewed appeal for more and still more nurses to build up the staffs of the metropolitan hospitals has led to a further manpower combing of the country districts for young and eligible women to fill these positions. In Whakatane yesterday a further quota of young ladies were interviewed with that end in view. To those who know the Asperate shortage of female assistants in both in commercial and in professional life, such further action, by the manpowering authorities can only be regarded as utterly futile. As publishers of a newspaper, we are m a position to know exactly just how drastic the position is. It is rather irritating therefore to note the strenuous efforts made in country centres of a few thousand population, to draw away still more from the already understaffed shops and offices, whilst the metropolitan centres where the: identity of the individual is more or less lost, are skimmed over in a superficial and nonchalant manner.
