PAPER MILLS BALL
OUTSTANDING SUCCESS
NEW YEAR FUNCTION
One of the outstanding functions of the year took place in the Winter Show Buildings when the employees of the Whakafcane Paper Mills arranged their annual ball. The evening started at 8 p.m. with an item from the Boys' BandOther items were included during the evening when the dancers were entertained by various well known artists who gave their services willingly. Mr Stewart Pine one of our best known musicians gave solos on the piano accordion and the saxaphone. Mr Lance Armstrong who is back on holiday from University also obliged with a Hilly Billy number on the guitar. Mr Riki rattled a pair of bones to the accompaniment of Mr G. Ryan on the piano during the interval supper dance. The novelty items pleased the crowd immensely and drew hearty applause . The 'dance music was provided by [ the Premier Dance Band who excellied themselves and gave the (lancers a variation of old-time apd modern steps. An ice cream and soft drink stall was in great demand. The services of Mr the photograplier a world gold medallist and. his assistant were much appreciated as they had travelled from Rotorua to give the dancers the benefit of some candid photography. A thrilling sight was the Caledonian Pipe Band which marched into the hall and gave the dancers a Highland two-step a lively number it was too.
The hall decorations which were most pleasing were idue to Mr and Mrs Dodds who are to be complimented on their artistic work. Members ol' the committee whom do the real work but who are noti in the limelight are Mr Hewitt and Mr T. Campbell the doorkeeper.
The Master of Ceremonies, Mr J. Corbett anil his two assitants, Mr J. Cocltburn and F. Ryan 'kept the dancers in great form. Many novelty dances were included such as Monte Carlos Spot Waltz and supper dance. The M.C. at the microphone and Mr Ryan on the floor kept the dancers on their toes and in great humour.
Mr J. Corbett, President of the Committee then thanked the Ladies' Committee comprising Mesdames Corbett. Pithie, Bowering, Bennett Armstrong, Dodds, Brown, Bull and Anderson for their wonderful supper they had provided and added that after all the way to a man's heart, was through his 'tummy.' Looking around he remarked, that he had never seen so many happy faces and further, that the boys overseas would be pleased to see every one happy because that was just how we are going to welcome them when they
returned home after cleaning up the Germans and Japs. (Loud applause).
Mr Corbett thanked also the folk present for their wonderful support in helping the committee in making a success of the and wished all present a happy New Year.
