THE MAIL SITUATION
INCREASE ON LAST LEAR An intervieAV with the Whakatane Postmaster revealed the following sidelights on the mail and telegraph situation: — In the main, work in every branch was slightly heavier than last although not enough to cause undue concern. One additional, lad was employed in the telegraph depart-* mcnt Avliile another assistant was on duty with the post womam The fault man's truck was once again, placed at the disposal of the mail department and was fully employed on the job of delivering parcels for. several days. The telegraph branch also received additional work by way of inward telegrams while inward toll calls also showed an increase on last year. The heaviest time in all branches but more particularly in. the mail room was on December 24 when the usual last minute rush to send gifts was encountered. All told there has not been much increase on previous war years as the additional trains have made for a more even distribution, but the*. Post Office certainly knew Christmas, had not been altogether forgotten*
