RUATOKI NATIVE SCHOOL
FIRST ANNUAL SHOW
KEEN -MAORI INTEREST
The first annual Calf Club and Agiiculture Show was held in the Kuatoki Native School grounds on December. 8. Notwithstanding the lact that this- was the first show held in the district the entries in all sections were large and promise, of really outstanding displays in the future. The exhibitsv\ ere housed in two of the large open, air rooms and included sections for fruity native crafts, children's and adults cook-' ing.
The following are the prize winners lor most points in each sec-* tion:— Vegetables: Cherry Mferribt'l; Boy Biddle. 2; Tikina Puke 3. Flowers: Reg Nikora 1; Henera 2; Cherry Merritt 3. Cooking: Elaine Wilson Aroha Queenie. Kaaho Charlotte Tlirupp equal 1. Fruit: Hake Ivohonui 1. Native Leaves (named): Pune Akuria 1; Charlotte Thrupp 2; Ngati Mika 3.
Collection of Native Kits Best Flax: Elaine Wilson, Best Maoxi" Dyed: Tatai Winslade. Best Made: Lovie Eretini.
The exhibits in the decorated plate section showed originality and a great sense of colour blending and arrangement. The 30 entries were all masterpieces many being complete with rustic seats, bowers and paua shell paths. The awards were:— Rahi Koho-nui lj Martha Thrupp 2; Elaine Wilson 3.
Adult Cooking: Mrs Milroy 1; Mrs Milroy 2; Mrs Wilson 3.
During the afternoon the horses and dogs paraded in the s&ow ring before the judges. Dogs: Hake Kohonui 1; David Kelly 2. Pups: Rosie Taua 1. The school pony section was judged on riding ability of the owner care and lead* ing and following. Many of the: horses showed careful training and some children were followed ,by their ponies over the whole 25 yards of the test. Senior Division: Frank Vercoe 1; Raka Rupe 2; Trainor 3. Junior Division: Peggy Biddle 1; Rangi Puke. 2; Maurice Horoa 3. Over twenty calves paraded for the Calf Club judging. Senior Members: Boy Biddle Championship Cup and Medal; Arnold Wilson 2; Tui Mika 3.
Junior Members: Cherry Merritt 1; Muriel Green 2; Bunty Melbourne 3. After the judging Mr A. of Ngongotaha, gave a talk to the children on the selection, care and attention and feeding of calves. The following were the judges of the various sections-: Cooking and Flowers, Mrs A. Missen; Maori Crafts, Mrs W. Rangi; Dogs and Pups, Mrs R. Hamlyn; Vegetables and Fruit Mr A. Missen; Horse Events, Mr J. Merrit.t; Calf Club Exhibits, Mr A. Missen, The large attendance of parents and other supporters was much ap~ preeiated by the staff of the school, who not only acted as stewards but also conducted a well stocked canteen. A hangi prepared by Mr Ta Hau did a roaring trade.
