CLOTHES DRIVE
ASSISTING DESTITUTE GREEKS
SATURDAY'S SCOUT EFFORT
"A gesture from a New Zealand mother to the people' of Greece hoping that it may in some small way repay them for t/hie| hospitality and kindliness shown her soldier son whilst serving with the British Army in Grc'ece in 1940." Such were the contents of one of the notes found in the pocket of a brand new suit which was collected by Scout workers in the Borough last Saturday. The clothes drive was in aitd of the destitute people of Greece whose condition since the Nazi evacuation has bt'en described as deplorable. The drive was, made by the. Scouts in response to an appeal from Red Cross headquarters and from every point of view can be described as highly successful. The. quality of #lie average garment was probably the most surprising feature of the collection. In many cases clothing was brand new whilst the majority of the donors had taken tlie added trouble to see that they Avere, clean. Woollens; probably predominated some of the knitted articles being in first class condition and suitable to go into any home. Beautifully worked babies' clothing was supplied from many parts of the. Borough and these will be doubly acceptable to the Red Cross distributors. The best part of five car loads were carried to the. assembly point, the V.A.D. rooms in Commerce Street where under the instruction of Mrs Mo-ran. of the Lady Gahvay two members of the Girl Guide troop worked assiduously in grading and mending as the parcels came to hand. There was a good response from Oliope where a patrol of the Scottish Scouts, covered the beach from end to end and gathered a substantial quantity of useful clothing. The; net result is that from Whakatane will go forward a number of wellpacked cases of much-needed clothing for disposal amongst the suffering civilians of Greece. Work is still proceeding on the sorting and reconditioning of the garments but it is hoped that. th-> cases will be on their way to Wellington well before Christmas. I
