WHAKATANE BRANCH ACTIVITIES

WORK FOR THE MONTH The monthly meeting of the Whakatane branch of the. N.Z. Red Cross Society was held in the Borough Council Chambers on clay 12th December, with Mrs Sullivan rn the chair. Mrs formerly Miss Welfare Officer for the Crippled Children Society introduced Miss Larew to the committee. Miss Larew will act as Welfare Officer when Mrs Eagles retires in January. Mrs Eagles reported on various crippled children whom she. had contacted. There are 34 cripples in this area. Mrs James moved that a letter of congratulation be sent to Kevin Free, who has won a Scholarship. Health Camps: Mrs Barry sold £6 worth of Health and the Junior Red Cross Circle are also selling some. Mrs Winstone said she had received a donation from the High School Junior Red Gross Circle of £25 to be. sent to the Greek Junior Red Cross. Some months ago two j'ouths A. Simonsen and C. Kenworthy doDsted 15s to Red Cros.s .funds, which they had raised by organising concerts. A. Simonsen had now left and C. Kenworthy handed in a further sum of 6s 6d to. Mrs Winstone last week. Appeal for Clothing for Greeks: Mrs Moran was taking charge of the packing for this appeal. Several ladies present offered to assist. Lady Gahvay Guild: Mrs Moran said she had recently despatched four cases containing over 400 garments. 1 Knitting Circle: Mrs Timbs £ave a list of goods sent off sincie: last month. For the Joint Council two pullovers one pair socks; for Patriotic four scarves, one balaclava. Sewing Circle: Mrs Ramson reported that she. has no sewing on hand at the moment-—l 2 pairs of pyijamas should be in shortly. Entertainments: Mrs E- Armstrong said the Welcome Home Dance was a success.. Two boys had been farewelled there—Geoff Moore and Geoff Haultain. Shop: Mrs Sullivan said she had not a complete list of shop takings. The Ohope ladies had taken over £65 on their day, which they were donating to Soldiers' Comforts. Mrs Sullivan said a returned prisn oner of war Mr Dahm had donated a sack of wood to the shop to be raffled. He spoke in high praise of the Red Cross without which he •J said he and many others would not have survived. Building Committee: 'Mrs Sullivan saitl the Building Committee had met twice and considered and made suggestions re a plan drawn up. A plan was shown to the committee who considered it an excellent one. Mrs James moved that the plan as shown and the recommendations of the Building Committee be approved, and the: com-? mitt.ee be giwn power to act. This was seconded by Mrs Caisley and carried unanimously, Mrs Sullivan wished all members the compliments of the season } and the meeting concluded.
