1945 GYMKHANAS

SCHEDULE OF DATES CONFERENCE DEC! SIONS

Delegates from district Patriotic and Sports Committees attended the special conference called at Edgecumbe recently for the. purpose of fixing a set schedule of dates for forthcoming gymkhanas for the 1945 season. In the gymkhanas have played an important role in the raising of funds to offset patriotic quotas and districts in the Whakatanc area have been singularly successful in. this direction. The great however, to this method of fund raising has been the continual clashing of dates for one district effort against thus making neither a success. The Edgecumbe meeting was designed to overcome this past difficulty and all delegates expressed satisfaction that Awakeri had shown the initiative in convening the meeting.

A Pukehimi delegate mentioned the fact that in Te Puke district it had been the usual practice for several patriotic district committees to join forces and to stage a joint effort along special lines by way of seeking public support. By this method it Avas possible to promote two or three big sports gymkhanas instead of a dozen or so smaller ones. The proceeds had been uniformly substantial from each, resulting in the individual committees reaping a far greater benefit than had they relied upon their own small districts for support. The public, likewise was not overburdened with a procession of gatherings all of which it was expected to attend. He knew that too much of the same type of entertainment in small areas only a mile or two apart sickened the .public as a whole and did a great deal of harm to the. whole conception of sports meetings. The views expressed above were endorsed by several speakers and it is likely that this district Avill see in the 1946 season something of the composite gymkhanas referred. The list for 1945 was decided as under: — February 10th: Thornton Hall Committee and R.S.A. February 17th: Whakatanc Show Committee. February 24tlr. Pu'kehina Patriotic Committee. March 10th: Matata Patriotic Committee. March 17th: Whakatanc Maori Patriotic Committee. March 31st: Waimana Patriotic Committee. April 2nd: Tc Teko Patriotic Committee. April 7th: Awakeri Patriotic Committee . April Hth: Taneatua Patriotic Committee (tentatively).
