OBITUARY

MR E. RUNNERSTRUM

lii the death of Mr Ernest Runnerstrum at. the age of 68 years Ohope lost a very good friend and one who had the utmost faith in the future of the. resort. The. late Mr Runnerstrum was known up and down the* beach' as one who was not. only a generous donor to any local causebut also as one who was prepared; to give practical help and advice, in all matters pertaining to the development of The beach.

The annual competitions and friendly sports meetings which he instituted for the benefit, of child-t rcn along the Eastern end of thebeach in front of his beautiful home, in its park-like-grounds were anti* cipated by young and old alike every New Year's day.

Born at Stockholm Sweden where •9 '9 he was educated the late Mr RunZ nerstruffi went to Ireland at the age of 18 where he was connected with one of the foremost, dairy factories for a year. He spent the. next two years in South Africa and then cam© to New Zealand. He settled first in Wanganui where he was partner in

a fresh food and ice company ? and the proprietor of the Maori Land Dairy Company.

In 1922 he founded with Mr C. Edwards the Waikato Valley Dairy Company Ltd. ? at Frankton i but with the introduction of zoning, he disposed of this company to the cooperative seven years ago.

Mr Runnerstrum was Chairman oi' Directors of the Valley Investments Co. Ltd. He. was also a most generous contributor to patriotic funds and lent large sums of money iy free of interest to both the New Zealand and Imperial Governments for war purposes. Well known ir» the Waikato he was a aemoer t f numerous Hamilton organisations and will be missed by many friends.

He is survived by " his \vife a a son on active service with the Australian army ancl three daughters.
