WINTER SHOW
ANNUAL MEETING HELD
PROSPECTS FOR COMING YEAR
The Annual General Meeting of the Winter Show Association Was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Saturday evening, when sufficient members for the necessary quorum were present. At tlic conclusion ol.' the reading of the balance .sheet., Mr F. B. Cutler? President of the Association, expressed his disappointment at the lackadaisical manner in which the public had accepted the Gymkhana held some months ago by the combined Returned Services and Winter Show Associations. At least 73 per cent of those who had attended he said, were country folic. No effort, had been spared on the part of the executive to make, the gymkhana interesting. The show had been widely advertised and much work put into its organisation yet. the people were just not interested. He thought that it was about time a little effort was made on the part of the townspeople. Proceeding with the election of officers the following members were appointed to the positions:— Patron: Mr W. Sullivan M.P. i President: Mr H. G. Warren. Vice-president: Mr A. Hall (reel ected). Executive Committee: Messrs G. Otley tf G. J. Waterhouse, A. Goodwin, F. Abbott, B. S. Barry, A. J. Canning G. R. Kent (all reelected) and Mr F. B. Cutler (retiring president). Treasurer: Mr C. G. Caisley (reelected) . Auditors: Messrs Prideaux and Bridger. Secretary: Mr C. Head (re-lcct-ed). In accepting the chair Mr Warren spoke highly of the. Winter Show Association which in his opinion was capable of performing a fair measure of service for Whakatane. There were people in Auckland, he who were surprisingly conversant with this town, and he"fe.lt. that it Avas associations such as the Winter Show which helped to bring this about. Commercial travellers 'as a whole also had a very good opinion of Whalcatane. In lie felt that provided the. backing of the people were maintained, and the members of the Association continued to work and pull together as they had done in the past, Whalcatane would eventually become even more widely known than it was at present. Mr S. S. Shapley then raised the point of whether or not it had been decided to hold a show in the coming year. Mr Warren contended that it was not advisable to proceed witli one during the next 12 months: as not only would the shortage of petrol effect its but /also the rationing of commodities would make it difficult for the ladies who were at the, moment playing such a big part, in Red Cross and Patriotic affairs to enter in the various sections open to competition. Mr B. S. Barry thought that the longer the Show was postponed the harder it would be to reinstate it. With regard to the petrol rationing lie contended that it tfoukl have very little effect as th e country people always appeared to have sufficient, to come into town when-1 ever they found it necessary. It should also be possible he thought to overcome the. shortage of. other goods and instanced the recent Anglican Bazaar which had been one of the most successful held for a number of years. Mr Hall was of the same stating that it might be possible, to hold the Show in the near future. ,It was decided to refer the matter to the next committee meeting when a decision would be made as to whether the Show or some other function would be held. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the retiring president Mr F. B. Cutler.
