OUTBREAK OF FIRE
OHOPE SCENIC RESERVE
AREA OF BUSH DESTROYED
Approximately half an acre of the scenic reserve at the top of the Ohope hill was burnt out on Sunday afternoon when sparks from a fire on the opposite side jumped across the road' and 1 set fire to the undergrowth. The blaze was started by the flame from a rubbish fire being fanned by a sudden change in the wind and l getting out of control.
The fire was first noticed early in the afternoon, and a gang of County workmen was immediately organised by the County Engineer, Mr G. H. Brebnei; to fight it. With' slashers and shovels a fire break
9 was cut down the almost precipitous loank to the location of the blaze where the work o£ extinguishing it began. After upwards of three hours toil the fire had been damped successfully but a further outbreak occurred about, an hour later. Once again the gang went to work and this time completed the job.
The rain which followed on Sunday night acted as a further safeguard against another flare-up.
Fortunately the Pohutukawa area was untouched although a number of tree ferns were damaged and destroyed. In the. main 5 the fire was confined to ti-tree. and second growth.
