FOUR PEOPLE INJURED

WAINUI ACCIDENT . CAR CATCHES FFRE Four people were injured,, two scriouslj-, when a ear caught lire and plunged over a bank into the stream at the iir.st bend at. the Kutnrerc end of the Wainui Road. When the car took lire the driver lost control and the vehicle first struck the bank and then s.\vung to the opposite side of the road plunging over the bank into the. stream. The occupants were badly burned by the flames and their immersion in cold water added to the shock. Those seriously injured were Mrs S, Collier of Kutarere, and a 1 year old boy named Oakes a grandson of Mr W. Oakes, Opotiki. The driver of the car Ma* W. E. Parkinson and Mr S. Collier-received less serious injuries and all four occupants of the car are reported to be making satisfactory progress. .Their burns were on the face arms, hands and legs being of varying degrees. Mr Parkinson received a twiste.d knee. ■ The accident was discovered by Mr Livingstone, a traveller lor Messrs Kempthorne and Prosser, who brought the. patients to the Opotiki Hospital where- the more serious injured will remain for some days. The plunge into the stream had the effect of. extinguishing the fire from the car, but it is believed that the car is badly damaged.
