•» WELCOME HOME DANCE OTHER DISTRICT ACTIVITIES A large crowd attended an enjoyable dance on Monday November 5 in the. Awakeri Hall the occasion being the Welcome Home to three servicemen, Ptc D. Baty, Spr D. Keen and L.A.G. R. Melville. After Mr Don Butler presented each of the guests with the usual Welcome Home gift stating how pleased the people of the district were to see them back. Each man briefly replied. Mr Coli McDonald was the M.C. while Mrs Scott with the accompaniment of the orchestra sang two numbers which were appreciated by the dancers. Bright music was supplied by the Premier Dance Band. Farewell and Welcome Home Committee At recent annual meeting of the Awakeri Soldiers' Farewell Committee it was decided to once again canvass the district to build up funds for an adequate. Welcome Home to boys returning. The collection last year proved to be a< great success, and it is hoped that residents will once again give generously to the worthy cause. The district has been split up amongst a number o.f collectors who will in the near future be canvassing from house to house. Gymnasium Club Saturday, November 1 saw the closing of tlie first season of the Awakeri Gymnasium Club. Closing night was marked by an evening of gymnasium followed by a social, a large number of members and friends having turned out to enjoy the fun. An enjoyable, supper proved to be very popular. The popularity of the gymnasium lias been widened throughout the season by the number of members who have turned out regularly to enjoy an evening of good fun and beneficial exercise. The club now has a good range of equipment assembled with as little, difficulty ow.ing to war-time shortages. Considering that the club started with nothing some six months ago the standard and enthusiasm of the members' Avork is very encouraging to the. members of the committee who have put a good deal of time into gymnasium affairs. A great deal of credit goes to Mr Fred Jensen Avho throughout the season has put in a lot of time and effort in holding the. club together. The club will be re-opening in the autumn Avhen it is hoped that all members, will turn out and further their standard of work.
