OLD RIVALS MEET AGAIN UNITED'S NARROW WIN The championship was advanced another stage over the week-end when Whakatane United defeated Waimana at Waimana by 3 runs on tiie first innings. Batting Waimana were all out for 119 before the luncheon adjournment. V. Miller and E. Wells- gave their side a good start, the former being very confident, and giving no chance's, until caught oil' a rising ball for '29. Wells Avas shaky but contributed a useful 15 before being bowled by Spring. After the opening partnership, several wickets fell cheaply until G. Wardlaw and D. Boynton became associated, when by hard hitting they put on 17 and 22 respectively. S. McConnell with 12 was the only other batsman to reach double figures. McKenzie was the. most successful bowler and finished up with 5 wickets for 8 runs. Rig-den 4 for bowled well and Spring 1 for 6 took the remaining wicket. Cameron and McKenzie opened for Whakatane and with 3 runs on the board the former played one on. Spring followed and was settling down nicely when given ouTL.B.W. with his score at 16. Roacli followed and assisted in a partnership of 42 before snicking a fast one, after scoring 14. Rigden with a useful 12 was the only other batsman to reach double figures. McKenzie carricd his score to 66 before being caught on the boundary, and his was an excellent display, giving no chances. The innings closed at 122. Millei, RufT and Martin took 2 wickets each.
