MAORI POPULATION
GREATER REPRESENTATION IN
PARLIAMENT SOUGHT
At the recent Maori Conference held in Wellington it was in A T ieAV of the rapidly increasing Maori population and of the present geographical difficulties, to urge the Government to giA'e. consideration to increasing the number of Maori members both in the House of Representatives and the Legislative Council. The conference considered the request to be -in conformity with the. principles of democracy and representative Government.
In connection with land claims and grievances the Conference recommended that a special Maori investigation staff with experience of research should be appointed immediately to search all relevant records and to prepare data for the guidance of a competent tribunal to be appointed for the investigation of all Native claims and grievances, including land administration; further that, no charge be made to Maori owners and others entitled to them lor copies of the data so piled.Other recommendations include the appointment of more Maori district nurses > that mobile X-ray units be made available to the Maori people and that mobile dental clinics be 'made available in districts where there are no dental clinics.
It was further recommended that the third year training course in Maori education he reinstated and extended to include the Maori language and culture so as to make it possible for the Maori language and culture to be adequately taught in Native in board schools with Maori and eventually in all schools.
