CRUSHED BY FALLING ROLL

A miraculous escape from death was experienced by a middle aged' employee of the Whakatane Paper Mr Graham Brown last Saturday afternoon when a heavy roll of cardboard weighing 15cwt., fell from an fc/ight-foot high, stack and l crushed him to the ground: Fortunately one end of the roll tilted as it fell and remained supported approximately one foot from the floor. It was due to this freak occurrence that Mr §rown owes his though his condition is described as critical. The. accident occurred about 2 IV. m. when Mr Brown was working in the, vicinity. The roll caught him about -the middle of its length severely crushing one side, on. which many ribs were fractured. He also suffered a fractured pelvis, and injuries to the spine which as yet have to be determined. A call to the St. John Ambulance brought the vehicle out- to the. scene ot the accident within 15 minutes. First aid in the meantime liacl been rendered by Mir J. Love of Anzac Avenue, who was later complimented on his work. The victim who remained cheerful throughout his painful ordeal, was removed in the Ambulance within 20 minutes of the accident a feature which speaks volumes, for the high standard of efficiency of the local brif ade. An examination in the local hospital made it clear that. the. spinal' injuries demanded specialised treatment, and the injured man was later taken through to Auckland, again through the instrumentality of the St. John Ambulance and members of. the local Brigade. Mr Brown is a married man with two children, living in King Street.
