MAIZE

PUBLISHED in today's issue is an advertisement from the Internal Marketing Department urging the growing of more maize in this district, and setting out the prices and subsidies which will be available to producers throughout the next marketing period. Growers need not be reminded of the concern which is now exercising the Department regarding the limited prospects of next year's output. Unless substantial additional areas are sown immediately there is every prospect of an acute shortage of maize next year. In view of the Dominion's pledges to the fighting forces in the Pacific, for a steady supply of pig meats, poultry and eggs, such a shortage would constitute a serious menace to production. The appeal therefore is to farmers generally to once more explore every possibility of putting down increased acreage in maize.
