"IN THE EARLY DAYS"
In a distant Island forest In the days of long ago t A slim and shapely sapling Decided it would show The Natives in its neighbourhood The way a tree should grow. Increasing in circumference And climbing steadily This ambitious sapling Became a mighty tree. The monarch of the forest Towering above the rest; A living spire of beauty From base to lofty crest. Generations of the Islanders Watched the big tree grow Then a band of bold adventurers Laid the giant low. After many days of patient toil The fallen tree became The splendid Island Whaka That shared its builders fame. When Columbus-likc they sailed away To discover lands afar; Their faith in Taneatua Hope was their guiding star„ After many days and nights Of mingled hope and dread They saw 'Aotearoa' The longed for land ahead. Historians have told How the. famous vessel came And gave to Whakatane Town Its melodious Rlaori name. H. SERGANT.
