FISHING SEASON PROSPECTS
ANGLERS will be awaiting with impatience the opening of the fishing season which occurs on Wednesday next. Prospects this year are described as 'good.' Lake and stream fishing in this district should, according to authoritative observers be well on a par with the more successful seasons of the past. A decided improvement in the condition and weight of trout in Lake Rotoma *has been noted. Large numbers, including many fish between 61b and 71b were seen ori the spawning beds. Credit for this improvement is given to the smelts and "bullies" which were placed in the lake some years ago. These little fish have multiplied to the great satisfaction of the trout. Permits are reported to be in keen" demand this year, a feature which is possibly explained by the improvement of angler's equipment which is now available. From reports to hand regarding the ris-< ing of well grown rainbows in the streams flowing through the Rangitaiki Plains district sportsmen should be assured of a satisfying and successful season.
