NATIVE RATES PROBLEM
COUNTY COUNCIL SUGGESTIONS
CLASSIFICATION OF LANDS
The unanimous opinion that nai tive rates should be paid where the Nativg%'Department was handling the. funds and on a productive basis in other was expressed by the conference, of representatives of ten county councils in Tauranga last week. The. meeting also felt that some form of classification basis; could be evolved and in this> connection it suggested the following:— Class A. lands—capable, of. full production—full rates; class B r lands —semi-productive—half rates; class C. lands—non-productive—non rateable. With regard to Class A. and Class B. lands, the Native Rating Act could be amended so as to vest these lands in the Native Land Court as trustee for native owners and with power to lease- under simi* lar conditions to Crown leases. A motion embodying these suggestions was moved by Mr J. T. Reid ? chairman of the Tauranga County Council and seconded by Mr E. Deeble chairman ol the Coromandel County Council.
