PROPOSED NEW ROAD
Sir,—Re. tlie new road the Harbour Board propose ta make across the mudflat from the Strand to Kopeopeo. What has this got to do with the Harbour Board Their business is to look after the shipping' and the wharves—certainly not road making. We have not heard yet what the. road is to cost. With the purchase of the land and the making of the road to Borough requirements the cost will probably run into a few thousand. This perhaps does not concern me, much except that it might increase my rates a bit which at the present time are more than high enough. We really don't want the which after all only reduces the distance into town (for us in the country) by a few yards. Is it not usual for expenditure of this kind to first take a poll and get the sanction of the ratepayers? If the Harbour Board has the money on hand—instead of. spending it on a new road which we. can do without why not reduce, the Harbour rate and receive not only my blessing but that of the whole county also. Nothing pleases every one of us more than a reduction in rates—let's have. it. Yours etc. - COUNTY (West End).
