GOVERNMENT NOMINEES
That Government representatives be not appointed to county councils and that the chairman of the county councils be elected annually were? two decisions reached at the conference of representatives of county councils in Tauranga last week.
Other decisions made were that the present restrictions of members contracting with their local authorities be retained; that additional to the. present mileage £1 Is be paid councillors for meeting attendance; that enrolment form be amended to provide that the apjilicant states definitely that he or she is 21 years of age or over—also that the applicant states definitely that he or she has resided for not. less than one year 'in New Zealand; that all members of local authorities be elected by popular vote; and that all local authority calls close on the same day and*on an earlier date than at present.
