TREATMENT OF
CENTRAL HOSPITAL ADVOCATED
MAORI PROBLEM DISCUSSED
The Whakatane Hospital Board miad'e it clear at its last' meet-* ing that it favoured the establishment of a central hospital for ■the Eastern Bay as apart from the existing institutions for the treatment of tuberculosis.
The question arose when the secvices of the roving TJ3. specialist were under discussion, and in view of the board's stand with regard to further capital expenditure it was obvious that, any further additions to the local hospital under these conditions could not be countenanced.
Mr Mullins thought that the Government should sponsor the erection of a central and completely new T.B. to which natives from the East Coast could be sent for specialised treatment. The problem was practically confined to the native, race and it was unfair that one board should be expected to carry the burden.
Mr McGougan agreed that Maoris would not leave their own districts and go to a sanitarium, and that therefore, a special institution for their use was- essential 'in the Bay.
The whole scheme should be financed from Social Security declared Mr J. P. Caulfield who moved that this suggestion should be placed before the. forthcoming conference of the East Coast Hospital Boards.
