OCTOBER MEETING HELD
DISTRICT ACTIVITIES
The monthly meeting of the Uct Cross Society took place in the Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday October 10 at 2 p.m. with Mrs W. Sullivan in the chair.
Crippled Children: Socicly: Mrs Sullivan stated that Miss Adams, Welfare had reported that satisfaction- progress was being made in the district. The committee had bought a bicycle, which could be. used by a crippled boy who was three miles from a school, and could not go by bus. The bicycle would remain the property of the committee, and when the boy grew too big to use it, it could iDrobabty | be made available another one, needing it. Arrangements had also been made for another child to go to Wellington for a special examination . V.A.D.: Mrs Prideaux &aid the}' were at present holding classes in a small shop rented from Mr Shapley another class would b e starting soon. Comforts: Mrs Shapley reported that her committee was still working on hussifs, and would soon be starting to pack the Xmas parcels. They would be. grateful for small books to enclose in the parcels and also scrim or clean flour bags for wrapping. A letter Avas read from a local boy in India who wrote ex-* pressing thanks for a parcel packed by Mrs Shapley's committee.
Sc.wing: Mrs Ramson stated that there were twelve pairs of pyjamas ill out ? and she had received another 12 pairs recently.
Knitting: Mrs Timbs gave a list of articles made and despatched. They were for Joint Council: Four long-sleeved pullovers 5 sleeveless pullovers, 7 pairs socks i 2 pairs goveS } 1 pair mittens. For Patriotic: Tc,n 1 long sleeved pull1 pair mittens, 1 pair bedso clis and 3 balaclavas.
Entertainments: Mrs E. Armstrong said a farewell parcel had been givn en privately to Coleman Haynes Merchant Navy). A good number had attended the last meeting of the
Welcome Home Committee, and it had been decided to hold a Smolto or members of the last furlough
draft on the 15th inst. Nearer Xmas another Welcome Home Dance would be held.
Shop: Mrs Sullivan said unfortunately Mrs James could not attend the but &he had sent in a report. Shop takings for the last month were £137 lis this included the result of the Paper Mills ladies' day which brought in £52 10s 3d.
Lady Galway Guild: Mrs Moran said she and her helpers, were now working on the appeal for Polish Orphans. Not many garments had been received to date,, but she hoped more Avould come in soon. The appeal was urgent.
