PREMATURE

PEACE CELEBRATIONS BOROUGH COUNCIL'S OPINION "We have quite a hard road to hoe yet, and there will still be men losing their lives in the struggle. Therefore I think any move to plan for formal peace celebrations would be premature and uncalled for, and! likely to add to that spirit of complacency which is unfortunately . all too apparent at the present time." In this manner His Worship the Mayor spoke to the suggestion made last month by councillors that steps should be taken to have something in mind for the celebration of the peace at last Monday evening's Borough Council meeting.

In answer to the council's enquiry, the Mayor of Auckland wrote, stat Ing that all he had done was to ar-« range for a brief ceremony outside the Town Hall, and for services of thanksgiving on the following Sunday. The Prime Minister intimated that plans were referred to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

"Had Germany started to celebrate her victory after said Mr Barry "what would the world have thought of her? I think we can leave it until we are certain. In the meantime we know that its been a long war and a hard war, and that its far from finished yeti' Cr Armstrong as. the proposer of the original motion, said he was only guided by the impulse that suitable, services of thanksgiving should be'heltf.

Cr Canning: We have still the Japs. We should not start rejoicing until we have cleaned them up. The matter was left at that the council deeming it best to allow the celebrations should an armistice come, shddenly, to take their own spontaneous course.
