COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL

GIRL GUIDES ENTERTAIN [NAL OF ANNIVERSARY WEEK ''This evening will cictse our Anniversary and' I would appeal to those parents who are here to see to it that instruction and training given to their daughters' in the Guide Movement are carried', out in the home. Only by doing this can they co-operate with us in achieving the aims and objects of Guifding.'' In this way Commissioner Barry addressed the assembled parents and friends at the complimentary social extended by the Whakatane Company last Saturday evening.

The social was a fitting conclu* sion to a very memorable succession of events held during the Coming-of-age week, and drew a crowd of Guides Scouts Brownies and Cubs

and adults estimated at 500 to the Winter Show Hall.

Mrs Barry briefly traversed the history of Guiding in New and thanked all who had been associated with the promotion and running of the successful Rally held that afternoon.

The programme opened with the piping into the hall of Commissioner Barry who was r-ece.ived by the M.C. Lieut. M. Reardon and esr corted to the platform. The proceedings were enthusiastic from the outset and provided a balanced entertainment for young and old. A playette by the members of the Citizen's Troop, portraying ' the trials (some, of them Ed) of the Editor of the Bay of Plenty Beacon, was very cleverly acted and warmly enjoyed. The Boys' Band ? looking resplendent in their smart new uniforms. added to the variety of the evening by several bright and lively selections. Brownies and Cubs were also to the fore with songs and jungle dances, while, the Junior Pipe Band provided some stirring selections which brought the house, down.

A happy incident was the surprise presentation of a silver toast-raclc to Commissioner Barry by Lieut. Reardon oni behalf of the Guide Company an incident which brought forth sustained applause. Mrs C. Kingsley-Smith later presented a framed picture of Princess Elizabeth in Guide uniform to Lieut. Reardon, for hanging in the Guide hall (when built). This was also warmly appreciated by the assemblage..

Two neatly executed folk dances were given by the Guides prior to the girls taking part acquitting themselves with much credit. The supper itself was a tremendous undertaking, shouldered on the main by the same indefatiguable. ladies who had worked so well during the afternoon at the Rally. Upon their standing they provided a 'sit-down' repast complete with jellies and cream for every person present. The fact that even the hungriest Oliver Twist was enabled to have all he wanted spoke volumes for the ladies and the splendid manner in Avhich they carried out their task. ]

The cutting of the beautifully iced birthday cake, with its* twenty-one lighted candles was attended with all the traditional enthusiasm associated with this time-honoured custom. The decoration was once again due to the artistic ability of Mrs Print who had excelled herself in 9 the process. A feature of the evening was the number of dances for Guides and Scouts introduced into the programme with signal success. Thanks and appreciation on behalf of the visitors were expressed by liis Worship the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, who said that the whole of the celebrations as far as Whakatane was concerned had been splendidly organised and carried out. He wished the Movement all future success.

The evening closed with a by Lieut. and the singing of Auld Lang 4 Syne by the entire assemblage .
