TANEATUA ACTIVITIES

The September meeting of the Taneatua W.I. was held on Tuesday } September 12 v Mrs Gardner presiding. The meeting opened with the Institute song and the Aspirations which were read by Mrs Semmens: The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed and correspondence dealt with. An invitation to the birthday of the Wliakatane W.I. was received, and several members expressed a desire to attend, provided that transport coud be. arranged. The remits for the Bi-annual Council meeting were freely discussed but, as there was onljr a small attendance it was decided to leave the. election of delegates till the October meeting. Member si were given the programme for the Flower Show to be held at the October meeting.

"Mrs Grey submitted the decision of the Dominion Council as to the allocation of the subscription and a paragraph on this and the Doming ion President's letter were. . read from "Home and Country." The Golden Thread .talk was by Mrs Moore who gave -an interesting account of a visit to Russell, including places of historical interest. The. roll call "Impromptu Speeches" was well responded to, nad gave members; a chance to expres their views on a variety of subjects. Winners of competitions were :—■ A, Gloves: Mrs Merrie 1; Mrs Moore 8. B Sponge without butter: Mrs Hay ward 1; Mrs Merrie 2. C i Best flower: Mrs Hayward 1; Mrs Semmen.s> 2. After a delicious' afternoon tea served by the Mesdames Fox, Hayward and Miss Hills, the meeting closed with the National Anthem. Gardening Circle The August meeting of the Tane*atua W.I. Gardening Circle was held at Mrs Anderson's residence. The minutes of the previous meet-t ing wc.rc read and confirmed. The business consisted of the programme for the Flower Show to be held in October. It was decided to have the same classes as last year with a few slight alterations. Mrs Adams and Mi ss Hills volunteered to arrange the entries in their respective clas« ses, and several members oU'ered to donate prizes. It was decided to charge an entiT fee of 3d per entry or Is for four or more.

A musical competition v. as won by Mrs Gardner. Alter a delicious afternoon tea, served by the hosMiss Hills and Mrs Grey members walked round the spacious grounds and viewed the well-kept flower and vegetable gardens. One greatly-admired feature was a beautiful plum tree covered with a wealth of white blossoms.

Results of competitions were :—■ A (> Bests flower: Mrs Grey 1; Mrs Adams 2; Mrs Haywarcl 3. B, Best vegetable: Mrs Hay ward 1; Mrs AcMms 2: Mrs Doran 3. C ; Best posy: Mrs Grey 1; Mrs Merrie 1; Mrs Adams 3. MEETING AT EDGECUMBE The September meeting of the Edgeeumbe Women's Institute was held in the hall and Mrs Robb presided over a good attendance. The meeting opened with the Ode to Friendship and the reading of the Aspirations. Remits for the Council meeting to be held in October were discussed and voted upon. A collection was taken for the Leper Fund. ! ' Mrs Print, of Whakatane then I gave a very skilful demonstration of cake icing which was- followed with keen interest. A vote of thanks was, passed to Mrs Print. -A talk on the care of babies and young children was then given by Miss District Piunket Nurse. this was very instructive and interesting and the speaker was accorded a hearty vote, of thanks. A dainty afternoon tea was served by t!ie hostesses J'or tlk- afternoon } Mrs, Spiers; Mrs Rountree and Mrs List. Competitions were Avon as follows: Potted meat: Mrs Bryer.s 1. Smocked article: Mrs Malpas 1. Polyanthus: Mrs A. Rus-sell and Mrs Learning 1; Mrs Robb and Mrs Sneiling 2. Best flower: Mrs Malpos. 1; Mrs Learning 2; Mrs Snelling and Mrs Wilson 3.

The afternoon closed with a vote of thanks to Mrs Robb and Mrs Roberts, president and .seerclary for the meeting and the singing of the National Anthem.
