HOSPITAL CHARGES

PROBLEM OF OUTPATIENTS

WHAKATANE BOARD'S PROTEST

When the Pukeora Hospital Board announced to the Whakatane Board its decision to increase its charge for paitients from other districts to 18s per an emphatic protest was entered by thtf local board. The chairman, Mr L. Buddie, speaking on the subject, said that it was most unfair to notify Hospital Boards of any increase in this direction once they had fixed their budget for the year. The Whakatane Board, had, in the past., raised strong objection to this course of. action, and had even asked the M.P* for the district to bring the matter up in Parliament. From his point of view, the Pukeora Board should have foreseen this necessity months ago and have given notification early enough to enable the boards concerned to budget accordingly. Apparently the increased charge already had the approval of the Department of Health, and the Stabilisation Committee. The Whakatane Board decided to enter a strong protest urging that the charge in all hospitals should be universal other than in excep, tional cases.
