SCHOOL ESSAY COMPETITION REMARKABLE RANGE • SUGGESTED Inaugurated by the newly constituted Whakatane Beautifying Society the 'Essay Competition' thrown open to children of the local school met with a remarkable response and has brought to light a new slant on 'How to Beautify Whakatane' as seen from the more juvenile viewpoint. The schcme was an undoubted success and will serve to show a point or two to adults in the matter of civic pride. Fernery and rustic adornments round Wairere fall and stream. 9. Improved railway station. 10. Beautify area round Borough on- ice and Fire Station. 11. Householders must help themselves . 12. Collect logs littering Heads beach. 13. Waterfront seats and gardens. 1-1. Beautify children's, playground and keep mown. -15. Old buildings in town removed or re-painted. l(j. River bridge repaired and groomed up. 17. Clean up rear Strand frontage. 18. Swimming pool, public tennis lawns. 19. Marine parade to Heads Hanked by (lowering cherry trees. 20. Tidy up under Domain trees. 21. Rubbish dump removed to Valley Road. 22. New Post old one scrapped . 23. Modern Hats erected. 24. Statues of Captain and leading historic figures, erected. 25. Health resort established at northhheatd t Avhcre the sun shines all day. Hostel and camp grounds. 2(>. Sewerage improvoments. 27. Swimming baths at Heads. 28. Bridger's factory to be rc-j painted. Ice plants in crevases of Pohaturoa Rock. 33. Re-paint Band Rotunda. 31. Erection of sound-shell at He a dp. 3f>. Remove Band Rotunda opposite: Rock. 3G. Concrete, steps to Hillcrest overgrown by hardy plants such as Virginian creeper. 37. Defined tracks laid out to historic points on Hillcrest to vantage points commanding view. 38.
