40 PERSONS INTERVIEWED
A further raid was carried out by the Manpower authorities in Whakatane on Wednesday, 40 persons 35 of whom were Maoris being interviewed. The raid was carried out over the billiard saloons and hotels the picture theatre alone escaping as> the picture had started by the time the raid took place.
Of the forty persons interviewed 13 were cases of absenteeism from essential employment while five were definitely unemployed at the time. The majority of the Maori cases will come before the Maori Utilisation Committee at its next sitting at the beginning of next month. The reason given by the remainder are at present being checked with the employers.
With the acute shortage of labour obtaining at present at Matahina, there is no reason why any physically capable men should bo unemployed, and efforts are being made to adjust the position.
