SUCCESSFUL DANCE
FUNDS FOR SOLDIERS PARCELS
' A very well patronised dance was held in the Waimana Hall the profits of the function going towards buying parcels for local men who are serving in the forces. A bring and buy stall was held which did brisk and com* petitions and quick raffles were held during t.h e evening. The sum of £36 odd was taken which was an excellent effort. During the evening Mr J. L. Burnett took the opportunity of extending a welcome home to Sgt. John Ruff who has recently returned from overseas'. Mr Burnett asked the guest of the evening to accept a gift from all present as a small token of appreciation of what he had done lor his country and how pleased he was to be able to welcome the me.n home again. All joined in singing "For He's a Jolly Good after which Sgt. Ruff thanked Mr Burnett and those present for the splendid evening and gift which was greatly appreciated. He also thanked all who had sent him parcels etc. while which were a great help. The novelty dances were most popular all joining in the fun. A beautifully iced fruit cake was won by Mrs McConnell Snr. The duties of M.C. wer e capablycarried. out ,by Mr Dick Boynton t and music for dancing was played by Mr and Mrs M. King, assisted by Mr N. Gallagher and Mr D. Boynton. Extras were contributed by Mr D. Seeker and Mrs Martin. Mr R. Morton was his help being greatly appreciated. Supper was. served by a capable ladies committee. Thanks were extended to the musicians and all others who had helped to make the function the success it was and the evening closed with the National Anthem. \ • INSTITUTE MEETING / W AIM AN A-NUKUHOU BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Wai-mana-Nukuhou Women's Institute was held last Wednesday afternoon in the Waimana Hall. There was a very good attendance of members and several visitors, were present. Mrs C. Wylde presided and opened the meeting by reading the. motto for the month "Talent is lost for the want of Courage." The singing of the Ode to Friendship and the hymn "Holy Father in Thy Mercy" followed. The minutes were read and routine business dealt with. Invitations were received from the Whakatane and Otara Women's Institutes; for officers, and mepibers, to attend their birthdays. A collection was taken for the Leper fund and the sum of £2 14s while more was promised. Two new members, Mrs Mortenson and Mrs Turner were welcomed. Delegates to attend the "Bi-annual Council meeting which is to be held at Waimana in October are Mirs '9 Cooper and Mrs Stansbury. The roll call was entitled "Can you tell me?" and lots of. questions; and answers resulted! Three minute impromptu speeches were most each member having certain subjects to speak on. The day's competitions* were: Vase of spring flowers for effect: Mrs Stevenson 1; Mrs T. Wardlaw 2; Mrs Woolfield 3. Best double flower: Mrs F. Bell 1; Mrs Stevenson 2; Mrs Woolfield 3. Best single flower: Mrs Wylde 1; Mrs F. Wardlaw 2; Mrs Woolfield 3. Best vegetable: Mrs Stansbury 1; Mrs F. Bell 2; Mrs Clark 3. Two best carrots-: Mrs. F. Bell 1; Mrs Clark 2; Mrs. Hewitt 3. A sales table was held for the Drama Circle funds; and did good business. A much enjoyed afternoon tea was served by the hostesses for the day. The president then thanked the judges and hostesses and the singing of the National Anthem closed the meeting.
