WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT WHAKATANE

The monthly meeting of the, Whakatanc Women's Institute was held at the Methodist Hall on Tuesday, September 5 # Mrs V. Stewart presiding over a large gathering of members. The meeting opened with the Institute song f followed by the Aspirations. Apologies were received from several members. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed and Mrs Stewart reported on the purchasing and donations of cakes for the Welcome H(?me Dance held recently. She also gave some interesting points on the recent Council meeting she had attended at Wellington. Two new members were elected and welcomed to the Institute. Arrangements for the birthday party were, to be left in the hands of the committee. The Golden Thread travel talk on Fiji was given by Mrs Sutcliffe and was much enjoyed, regret being felt that more time could not be given to these talks.

Mrs Lj T saght gave a reading on the life of Mozart as a child, while Mrs< Stewart played two pianoforte solos by that composer. Mrs Larmer also rendered two violin solos in her usual'charming manner. The: © musical items were much enjoyed by the members.. A wall musical competition was won by Mrs Cole. A collection was taken on behalf of the Lepers and amounted to £3 16s. , The results of the monthly competitions; were as* follows: A a Shoulder spray: Mrs Attwood 1; Mrs Stewart. -2. B Three Polyanthus: Mrs Mulliolland 1. C, Six stalks rhubarb: Mrs Moran 1; Mrs Hannah 2. The Garden Circle had arranged a flower show and a veiy fine showing of flowers, were much admired. Mr .Ryde judged the flowers and gave, a talk on the growing and care of bulbs f and the arranging of flowers which was much appreciated. Mrs F. Brown had sent a letter wishing the flower show a success, and kindly donating a number of packets of seeds for points prizes. She. also gave a number of interesting points on the showing ol' flowers. The secretary was instructed to Avrite to Mrs Brown thanking her for her interest and donation. The results were as follows: — Collection 6 Narcissi: Mrs Fennel 1 1; Mrs Sisam 2. ' Collection 6 Trumpet Daffodils: Mrs Larsen 1; Mrs Sisam 2. Collection G Anemones: Mrs. Stewant 1.

Bowl Iceland Poppies for Effect: Mrs McKenzie 1; Mrs Fennell 2. The Garden Circle Avas held at the residence of Mrs Sutcliffe as. it was a Avarm spring day the meeting was held in. the garden. Seasonal readings were on the flower and vegetable and the work for the month. Mesdamcs Fennell and Larsen gave talks on the, making of and brought samples of the A r arious types. Mrs Fennell demonstrated the propagation, oi' plants from cuttings. The Roll Call of favourite shrubs with flower was responded to by all. Afternoon tea Avas, seiwed by the hostess and a pleasant afternoon brought to a close. The competition results were as folloAvs: A 3 flowering shrubs: Mrs Sutcliffe and Mrs Mulholland tied. B Salad on saucer: Mrs Larsen 1; Mrs Mulholland 2.
