EDGEGUMBE FLOODS
EXAGGERATION ALLEGED
UNWELCOME PUBLICITY
Alleging exaggerated' publicity in the 'press' with regard to the recent floodings at Edgccumbc and the midplains Cr Hunter, at the, meeting of the' Whakatane County Council, said that. Mich publicity did not do the district any,, good, and further had led to much concern on the part of people living in other parts of New Zealand who had relatives here. Cr Hunter said he, had passed over the big flood, but. when ht was alleged that log's were again threatening the. river bridge at Edgccumbc. in the second minor spate of the river he felt it was time to say something. There had been a gross mis-statement, and he hoped the press would sec to it that its informants at Edgeeumbe were, asked to be more certain before furnishing their reports in future. The damage lay in the reports sent to the daily papers which had such a wide coverage and gave people a wrong conception of the real conditions. (AVe thank Mr Hunter for his remarks. They are helpful from the point of view of district reaction, and will be taken note of in future. The great difficulty at present with the limited staff at our disposal and the means of getting about, is to gather news from reliable sources when faced with events demanding instant attention. No items appearing in this paper have ever been inserted for any other reason than that they served to reflect as accurately as possible the conditions pertaining at the time, as far as is humanly possible to ascertain. The ques tion of the daily papers is another matter with which the portrayal of news from this district has little or nothing to do with this paper. Ed.)
