IMPORTANCE OF DRAINAGE

POSITION ON THE RANGITAIKI

FORMATION OF COMMITTEE

An important point usually overlooked by the majority of was raised by Mir W. A. McGrac'ken at the meeting of farmers at Edge- 1 cumbe last Tuesday evening. This was in relation to drainage, upon which the whole basis of the prosr perity of the Plains is laid. Mr McCracken urged that a ratepayers committee be set up to go into all matters relative to drainage, and to make the necessary representations when circumstances demanded.

For many years, now he the Rangitaiki farmers had been completely without, representation in this respect, and they had suffered as a result by not being able to take their case before the Department. It was. most important that they should have that voice in the. problem of drainage, for in the future it Avas going to play a very big part. He suggested that, a special meeting be called to go thoroughly into the matter of the whole drainage question which he, said was now acknowlodged to be in a very precarious position. He moved that this meeting set up a Drainage Committee which could confer with the Department on all local subjects and also the acquisition of suitable machinery which was now urgently needed. Mr R. W. Dunning seconded and the matter of convening the meeting was left in the hands of the chairman.
