POST-WAR CONSTRUCTION
MEETING WITH P.W.D
WORK IN THE COUNTY
Writing the. Whakatane. County Council at its meeting last Tuesday the P.W.D. notified that in order to consider undertakings in the post-war period it had been arranged that a meeting will be held at the Whakatane County Office at 10.30 a.m. on the 25th August. The Count}' Chairman would be attending this meeting and if possible he should be supplied with approximate estimate costs for each item submitted, apart from Highway work in which this County was interested. The idea was to assist the Department in setting out a o-year programme of work dealing mainly with highway and roading works and to include such works, as metalling formed county roads on which the usual subsidy basis would no doubt be, made, available. Where major works were the idea was to give the greatest, benefit to the greatest number of taxpayers. In estimating major jobs the sum of £800 per man per annum would have, to be allowed tt> make provision for materials accommodation, holiday pay and plant charges. In a further letter it was stated; in connection with the preparation of a five-year programme, Head Office of the Department now stated that local bodies could incorporate proposals for urgent County bridge replacements and also, most of these urgent replacements would more than likely carry a subsidy. The Council resolved that pre paration of schedules for DistriC Highways Council meeting of 25tl August be referred to the Count: Chairman and Engineer for action
