THE RURAL DELIVERY

POSSIBILITY OF CESSATION

ARMED FORCES DEMANDS

"I donVt know how many farmers realise it, but unless something is done there is every likelihood of ihe Rural Mail service on the Plains being sltopped by the end of the month." In this way Mr J. Mullins exploded' something in the nature of a bombshell at the meeting of the Farmers' Union at Edgecumbe last Tuesday evening.

Pic went on lo explain that the present owner Mr J. King s had been called up by the Air Force,, and his appeal Jo delay had been twice deferred in the interests of his work, He had been, asked to make endeavours to replace himself with a suitable man, but in this respect had been completely unsuccessful. Should he go into camp and there appeared to be every possibility there was little chance of the service being carried on. The meeting was solidly behind a motion to the effect that the whole position be brought to the notice of the Minister for Defence, and the seriousness of any curtailment emphasised. Also that copies of the letter be sent to the two district M.P.'s for their support. (In view of the statement by the j Prune Minister, with regard to the I demobolisation of a large part of the existing Air Personnel there appears little likelihood of the present reservists being called up f or per' rnanent training. Ed.)
