A REMARKABLE YEAR

ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSN.

THE WHAKATANE BRANCH

In his annual report at the meet J ing of tlic Whakatane branch of the St. John Ambulancc Association the

chairman, Mr A. J. Canning, stat eel qs under:—

I beg to report on the actions of the Association since our last meeting. Our classes have been functioning throughout the district and also Whakatane. Special attention has been given to* the Paper Mills class, so that any accident occu-ring would have first aid available at a moment's notice. My Association has found the calls on it so numerous that accommodation was quite inadequate to meet first, aid classes, parade, of Ambulance Division, Nursing Division and the Cadet Division also for meet' ings and the storage of equipment. A determined effort was accordingly made to raise funds for the purchase of a section and the building of a hall. A very suitable section has been procured and paid for, and owing to the splendid response by the public, avc Jiavc i)ow close on £600 in sight towards the building of a suitable hall.

We have had numerous oilers, l'rom tradesmen and others who have volv untarily undertaken tO' give their services free for the building of this hall so the committee have decided to proceed with the erection of it as quickly as possible, notwithstanding the fact that it is estimated that another £200 will be required ) in order to enable the hall to be completed free of debt. The, solid work that lias been carried out by the various and the excellent cti-operation and devotion, to duty by all members, has been a source of great satisfaction to me. During the year we have lost several valuable officers in the names of Mr Roy Hill who was transferred to Auckland, Mr S. Bishop who is at "the Medical College in Dunedin, Mr Len Edwards who was transferred to Paeroa, Mr Stan Miller my first, secretary now at Mt. Maunganui ) and Miss Tait who is now transferred to Blenheim. All these officers have been a great loss to us and they have our best wishes for their future success. I would also like to thank Doctors Appleby and Cole for their assistance in evening classes.
