ASSISTING THE MOTHERS

SPONSORED primarily by the local branch of the.Plunket Society, the idea of establishing a 'creche' along the lines of those already running so successfully in other centres is now addressing itself to a wider and growing circle of public interest. The scheme which aims primarily at relieving the worried mother and housewife of the responsibility of her children while she carries out her shopping unencumbered, has many .poits which address themselves. From a commercial aspect apart from any other the scheme if carried into effect would be a wonderful asset, for no mother handicapped with the responsibility of a young family can be expected to carry out all the necessary shopping within the limited time of the short midafternoon. The scheme embraces the establishment of a suitably furnished and equipped depot, properly run under the care of a trained and qualified attendant, or possibly two, according to the popularity of the innovation. It would enable mothers to leave their children without any misgivings, and to do their shopping with a free mind and proper discernment. To carry this most desirable thing into effect, funds are necessary, but we have no hesitation whatever in saying that its establismment must commend itself to every women's organisation together with the Chamber of Commerce, and possibly the local bodies. We pride ourselves on the enlightened nature of our times; it therefore becomes us to see to it that this small thing, which means so much to the young mothers of our community, is carried into quick and permanent effect.
