THE VICTORY LOAN

SETTING UP LOCAL COMMITTEE

Mr R. W. Stevens, organiser for the Thames and Bay of Plenty postal districts in the interests of the new "Victory Loan" which will be launched on August 28, vis'ited Whakatane last week and addressed a meeting of businessmen. Those present included Messrs. L. King; D. GMcCallum; G. Dainton;' C. L. Jordan; C. A. 'Suckling and H. G. Warren. Mr Stevens said that in the successful outcome of the loan, organisation would play a vital part and in order to obtain the maximum results it was necessary to set up strong and energetic local committees in the various centres. The campaign would last five weeks and for that reason the committee would not be required to initiate a long tedious campaign. He had, he said been already deeply impressed with the number of prominent citizens who had interested themselves in the new loan, and he considered there was no real reason why the objective 'substantial as it appeared should not be achieved. The security of the loan was unassailable and he had asked those at the meeting to assist in combating false and idle rumours which had gained currency. All political objections should be dismissed in the interests of the economic balance of the country and more, particularly the security of our fighting forces. Mr Stevens urged all who attended to direct their energies towards the success of the new loan, particularly by way of advising and assisting the wage-earner towards investment. In Thames, he said the W.W.S.A. had undertaken to canvass every housewife in the town explaining the purpose of the loan and enjbining them to persuade their husbands to subscribe. Delegates were appointed from the meeting to attend the forthcoming conference at Thames, alter which the committee will meet again and proceed to initiate the campaign in Whakatane.
