ARBOR DAY
WITH greater interest attaching to the peace, which now appears to be approaching, the Government has invited the general public to observe Wednesday, August 2nd, as the occasion for the celebration of Arbor Day.v As a result the newly constituted Beautifying Society has seized upon the opportunity of living up to its name, and has ar-> ranged a programme. This will include the planting of a number of native trees along the foreshore and at the Heads. It is particularly pleasing to note this practical commencement of a work which has been long overdue in our town. We suggest that greater interest would attach Tuesday's operations if the senior scholars could be brought from the school to participate in the ceremony in some shape or other, and that the civic interest be also enlisted by the presence of Borough Councillors at the planting . Brief speeches by the Mayor and the president of the. ciety could be included in the proceedings and the whole idea of beautification and tree-culture given a splendid advertisement locally.
