Maoris as Workers
"The widespread belief that the Maoris are incapable of sustained industry is quite, untrue," said Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland, when addressing a recent meeting of the Radical Club at Canterbury University College. Dr Sutherland said that if any race is thrust suddenly into contact with a new civilisation,, its whole way of life will be disturbed, and he, quoted a parallel case from Roman history when our British ancestors, imported as slaves l to Rome, were reported to be too lazy.
