VICE-REGAL VISIT
SIR CYRIL AND LADY NEWALL
WEEK-END IN WHAKATANE
Whakatane was honoured! over the week-end,, by a further visit of the Governor General and Lady Newal'l to the town in connection with the ceremonial opening of the new Maori Meetinghouse at Te Kaha. Their Excellencies stayed at the Commercial Hotel for the two days and once again characterised! their stay by their extreme friendliness and thajt complete absence of formality which Whakataneans have grown to re*spect. The official party arrived on Friday evening and were met by His Worship the Mayor at the hotel. ,In keeping with Their Excellencies wishes there was no official programme of any description and as in the past Lady Newall carried out her shopping armed with that ready smile which has already won her so many friends amongst t he towns people. The Vice-Regal party departed on Sunday afternoon after once : again expressing their appreciation of the town and the district, together with the hope that they would 1 be able to re4urn again shortly.
