Case Remanded Resulting from a fracas at Edgecumbe on Saturday a young Maori appeared in the Whakatane Court yesterday morning charged with assautling another Maori who is now in hospital. The case was remanded for eight days. Accident on Field As a result of an accident on the football field on Saturday during the Whakatane v Rangitaiki game at the Domain, Bert Hughes was admitted to the Whakatane Hospital suffering from an injury to his eardrum. Hughes, avlio was playing breakaway at. the time is one of the best all-round forward in the Bay. Johnson.. Girl Guide Rally The Girl Guide Committee is now made, definite plans for the running of the Guide rally in Whakatane next September. The rally will be. held in conjunction with the birth- * day \\;eek which will be recognised by the whole movement throughout the. world, and suitably celebrated. Other features which it is hoped to promote will be the ceremonial building of one of a chain of bonfires at the Heads and also the staging of a pantomime. On" Show Townspeople of Whakatane, were! amused on Thursday morning at the I sight of a grey cat and small ginger kitten basking in the sun in the of Dalgety's premises, latterly the Home Guard buildings. The sun was streaming through the glass and the two cats had seized the. opportunity to indulge in their morning wash. « Having performed their ablutions they proceeded to snatch forty winks. Haunted Auto Residents of Whakatane were intrigued on Thursday at lunch time by a succession of strange bumps and noises proceeding from a car parked by the curb at the top of the Strand. Obviously the car had no occupants but the succession of strange sounds continued without cessation. A BEOCON representative on the prowl spurred on by the thought of an exclusive "scoop' 1 braved innumerable dangers to trace the mystery to its source. It appeared, he said, that there was little Australian, news in the New Zealand papers unless it was news on some' thing that, was controversial. The drop in the number o licenses issued and the increase ii the fees collected is accounted fo: by the number of light trucks whicl have been taken off the road and th< extra heavy trucks which have conn into the district.
