PAPER MILLS DANCE

ST. JOHN AMBULANCE FUND

LARGE CROWD ATTENDS

The Paper Mills dance held in the Winter Show Buildings on Wednesday evening in aid of the St. John Ambulance Association was a topnotch turnout. Without doubt it was one of the best held so far this season . ' Horace Waite's Orchestra supplied the rhythm while .a tip-top supper was served by the ladies' committee, Mr "Taffy" Atkinson performed the duties of M.C. and the floor was kept comfortably filled from start to finish. A number of dances were played by a section of the Pipe Band which was present., the. favourite being a Highland Scottish during which a number of true Scots liallood and whoo-hooed with" much gusto and vigour. Dances apparently most favoured by the crowd were "Ail-in Evcuse-me Foxtrots and One Steps" and these were in plentiful supply interspersed with "Log Cabins," "Valetas" and "Maxinas." Novelty dances were also very popular, the £1 Monte Carlo being especially so. At. one stage of the evening, the air was filled by the strains of the rich baritone (or was it tenor) voice of F/'O 1 . Neville Harris, the only vocalist to perform during the evening. The crowd was entirely in spirit with the proceedings,, and this combined with excellent music, served to reduce the usual "stag-line" at the door to a minimum. • Novelty dance winners were as under: Monte Carlo, Miss Shirley Comiske.y and Mr Bert Lucas; Lucky Gay Gordons, Miss M.aj r Han ham and Mr "Snowie" Atkinson; Lucky Spot Foxtrot, Miss Margaret Robins and Mr Bill Howat; £1 Monte Miss Luke and L.A.C. Les Clark, R.N.Z.A.F. The popular winner of a competition which was drawn was Miss Jean Roberts, of Huntly.
