RUGBY AND BASKETBALL
INTER-SCHOOL GAMES MATCHES AT TE PUKE Last Thursday teams from the Whakatane District High School visited Te Puke to play football and basketball matches with teams from Te Puke D.H.S. The weather was somewhat unpleasant and passing showers made conditions rather uncomfortable at times for the players,. but otherwise the. games were thoroughly enjoyable. .The basketball games were on the whole evenly contested, Te Puke proving superior in the A match. The Whakatane B team played a very good field game, and more accurate goaling would have given them the match instead of a draw. Whakatane. C team had a fairly easy win, and Whakatane Primary team won after a closely fought contest. The scores Avere: — Whakatane A 5 Te Puke A 13. Whakatane B 9 Te Puke B 9. Whakatane C G Te Puke C 3. (Primary) Whakatane 6, Te Puke 5. In football the A teams were fairly evenly matched in the forwards, but the superior handling of the Whakatane backs combined with their speed and skill at making openings placed the issue beyond doubt. For the first ten minutes or so the Te Puke forwards dominated the game, but after that the Whakatane team settled down and played good football. The Te Puke team, however, played doggedly, and good forward work secured two tries for them. Tries were scored for Whakatane by Raureti, M\ Davis, Mundy, Teipa and Henderson, one being converted by Teipa. The B game, was somewhat ragged, being characterised by individual rather than team play. M. Law (2), Quigg and. Matchitt scored for Whakatane, B. Bell converting one try. The final scores were: — Whakatane A 17 Te. Puke A 8. Whakatane B 14 Te Puke 3.
