MINISTER'S INTEREST
THE RECENT FLOODS
DIFFICULTIES OF THE FARMER
The visit of the Hon. Roberts, Minister of Agriculture, to Whakatane was the signal to bring a number 1 of deputations into the town for the purpose of representing the position of those farmers who suffered' as a result of the recent floods. The Minister proved himself a patient and sympathetic listener, and though at his own request we have forborne to print the nature of the discussions,, we can assure our readers that he undertook to bring the whole position before Cabinet for reconsideration, Replying to his welcome, the Minister said he realised that the Whakatane district held great agricultural potentialities, and it would be his aim as Minister >to do his utmost to give Avhat. assistance and encouragement he could. He sympathised with those who had suffered loss in the flooding of their lands, and regretted that he had not been able to visit the district sooner. His difficulty had been the number of deputations from farmers with which lie had to contend. It was obvious to him now that all lines of farming required attention and investigation. Mr W. Sullivan, M.P., pointed out that the deputations from the Rangitaiki concerned people who had been the victims, not merely of one flood, but of two; and later on again of the ravages of the caterpillar plague; He; felt personally that the assistance, proffered by the Government, which though warmly appreciated, did not go far enough. It would be reasonable to ask the Government to shoulder the cost of seed and manure, and also the extra winter feed which had to be found to replace that which was 1 ruined. The special committee which had been set up asked for only 50 per cent, of these costs and he did not think under the circumstances, that there should be any objection to meeting the farmers to this extent, Mr F. W. Doidge (M.P. for Tauranga) also added his plea for those settlers in his electorate who had suffered.
