UNRULY MAORI

BEHAVIOUR IN HOTEL

WILFUL DAMAGE AND THEFT

Looking very sorry for himself a young Maori, Davis Nepia, appeared before Messrs G. A. Brabant and T. J. Cummings in the Whakatane Court las!t Friday on a variety of charges including theft, obscene language and mischief. All the incidents arose out of his boisterous behaviour in the Te Teko Hotel on June 1 last. Sergeant Farrell said defendant was a mill-hand employed at Matahina, and was only 22 years of age. He had had liqnor on the day in question, and was seen to enter the room of an employee. When he was ejected he became, violent and attacked Mr Mcßride who was in charge, using the bad language com-, plained of, and later smashing McBride's spectacles, and breaking a window. He was also caught in the act of. stealing a bottle of beer. Full restitution had been made since. "The only redeeming point about all this, is that the accused has made restitution," observed the bench. "He will be sentenced to one month's imprisonment for obscene language and convicted and discharged on the other counts."
