Lowering the Colours A point which, escaped the notice of many of those who liew flags to mark the fall of Rome was that in alowing the flags to fly all night they unwittingly transgressed on the old tradition to always lower the colours at sunset. No matter where the llag may be Hying or for what reason,, it is always lowered at or before dark. Donations to Hospital The. Bay of Plenty Hospital Board acknowledges donations received during the month of May as under: Children's magazines, Mir Edge; Bassinet for Maternity Annexe, Junior Red Cross; Eiderdown Quilt, for Bas-> sinct, Junior Red Cross; Duck, Mr W. J. Sullivan; Apples, Mr McGougan; Lemons, Mr Sax; Kumeras, Mr Haua; Lemons, Mrs Hawken. Oily Calm on Sea A fact which clearly noticeable yesterday from the top of the Ohope Hill was that out toi sea there was an oily calm stretching approximately as far as the Whale' where a line of ripples and white horses commenced. Unlike the usual calm seas experienced where the sun is reflected and small ripples break the surface, the sea yestcjrday had an entirely stagnant appearance, as if a thick coating of oil had been poured over the surface. Sons of Native Chiefs A proposal that the sons of native chiefs of Fiji and Samoa should |be admitted as boarding pupils at Waitaki Boys' High School was rejected at the monthly meeting of the High School Board of Governors last week. The question was raised in the report of the. rector, Mr F. Milner, who said that inquiries had been received from the Administrations in Fiji and Samoa asking that a selected group of the sons of chiefs should be received as boarders at Waitaki. New Books At the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Public Library Committee the. following books were selected: Dawn Like Thunder, R.
